Butte Literacy Council facilitates the following annual projects:
-
Books for Babies -
Every January, BLC sends books to local hospitals; new parents get a book to take home for reading to their new baby.
- Short Story Contest - Spring would not be complete without the BLC Short Story Contest, when local children and adults get a chance to compete for prizes and recognition.
AWARDS NIGHT: April 15, 6:30 PM at Barnes & Noble in Chico.
- Read-a-Thon - BLC's major fund-raiser is the annual Read-a-Thon. Held each Fall, this reading marathon takes place at Safeway supermarket on Mangrove Avenue in Chico. Local residents volunteer for blocks of time to read aloud selections from favorite novelists, poets, or their own works. Readers are of all ages and from various walks of life. Students, professionals, homemakers, retirees, and teachers participate to share their pleasure in reading and to obtain funds to support the council's programs.
- Juvenile Hall Donations - In December, BLC wraps and delivers new books for each person spending the holidays in Juvenile Hall in addition to reading materials donations during the year.
